On the eastern shore of Osoyoos Lake near Oroville an orchard past its 150th year of production is home to three gnarled Winesap apples first carried by Hiram “Okanogan” Smith from Fort Hope, British Columbia in 1861. The Okanogan apples thrive in this micro climate on an alluvial plain below barren hills and only four miles from the Canadian border. These three ancient apple trees are survivors of the very first orchard which established the multimillion dollar Washington state orchard fruit industry.
